Hooking up a subwoofer to my TV without a receiver.?
So I have a nice Vizio LCD and I like the built in speakers. I'm not looking to hook up a big receiver with multiple speakers etc. I'd just like to add in a subwoofer.
Now assuming the sub is self powered, (and my tv allows onboard + external speakers to play at the same time), can't I simply plug in the sub to the tvs audio out and the sub would play all the low frequencies just fine?
On a side note, aren't most decent home theater subs "self powered"? Hence the need for them to be plugged into the wall.
Ah I didn't think of either of those.
Assuming the TV has a variable audio out, how likely is it that a common home theater subwoofer would have a built in crossover or something of the like to filter out main sounds. (ie a sub that does not need dedicated sub line)
This is possible if two things happen.
1. The sub can handle a signal that's not a dedicated sub line, meaning you are sending it a full range signal, and it has a crossover to remove everything but the bass.
2. The Vizio audio outs have the option to choose fixed and adjustable audio out. If it's fixed, don't try connecting a sub, the level might blast the room with bass or simply be too low, either way it will be stuck at a fixed value. Even if the sub has a volume control, you'll end up having to change it every time you change the volume level to match each other, major headache.
If it's variable, meaning the audio out changes as you increase and decrease volume on the TV, this will work. Get into your TV menu and see what your options are for the audio being output.
