What laptop do you suggest for an EE student?
Hi all, I'm going to be a senior EE student this fall, and now that I'm not living on campus, I can't go back to my room to finish homework in between classes. I believe a laptop is the best solution for me. Here are the specs that I desire, and I hope that you can recommend some laptop models for me.
Dual core 2.0Ghz+ processor
3gb ram
160+gb HD
dvd drive
fingerprint reader
a/b/g/n wireless
10/100/1000 ethernet
15+ inch screen ( i was considering a tablet, but the writing on that is nowhere near precise enough)
Dedicated video card
at least 3 hours of battery life (6 cell most likely, 9 cell sticks out too much)
I'm going to use it to run mostly engineering apps, such as PADS layout, vizio, eagleware, matlab, orcad, etc. Having the ability to fire up warcraft 3 or something like that in class while bored is a plus

It'll cost you but I'm really a fan of Apple computers. It won't have the finger scanner but you can have all of those features plus many that you didn't even expect. probably the 15 inch pro looks like it can meet your needs. you may need the upgrade the ram but besides that it should work pretty well for you. Even if you want to run windows just install parallels or boot camp and it will run windows programs faster than PCs (there was just an article about it in popular mechanics). Start up is fast, no viruses, great for campus, and a GREAT interface. And especially for design or art a mac is essential.
I currently have the regular Macbook and at school (provided I turn the screen down) I get 4-6 hours off the battery depending on what I'm doing. Watching a DVD i get 4. But typing a paper or just on the internet I get over 5. and the macbook pros have bigger batteries.
