When buying a Tv? LED LCD or standard LCD and 120Hz or 240Hz?

I'm in the process of looking for a new LCD TV (46-55" range 1080p). I went to the store the other day to look at them and noticed no difference in quality between the LED and Standard LCD. As far as brands go I liked the pictures on Sony and Samsung. I heard people have lots of problems with samsung tvs though. I heard sony is good, but there are expensive. I was thinking Vizio when I walked into the store, but their pictures look grainy to me. As far as 120Hz and 240Hz goes I'm not sure if I could tell the difference. The notice of motion blur was minimal no matter what speed I looked at. Anyone have any good or bad experiences with LCD tv and have something to recommend?

The thing about TV pictures in the store is that there is no good digital distribution system. This means that the pictures of the TV's are usually better when what you see in the store. If you look at the connections to them, you will see five wires bringing the picture and audio to them. This is known as component and is analog. To really see the picture, you will need to have the store connect it to a digital source and play with the controls as the defaults are adjusted for the store lights, not your home.

LED TV's come in two flavors. Dynamic and non dynamic. Dynamic TV's cost more but the picture is usually much better. They have an array of LED's behind the LCD screen that lights it. The brightness of the TV is varied depending on the picture. This can result in a situation like the opening of Stargate Continuum where they show a big space scene and you can't see any stars because the LED's were turned off. Non dynamics can either have the same array as the dynamic or light them from the sides to get a thinner screen. Both types of LED TV's give bright pictures that can last for 20 years or more.

Regular LCD TV's are backlighted by what amounts to Florescent bulbs. Less bright and you may have to get a new bulb in 5 or 10 years.

The purpose of 120Hz and 240Hz is to convince you that the LCD pixels turn off fast enough for action. There is no TV signal available with more then 30 Hz so they generate artificial in between frames and the 240's show each of them twice. What you are looking for in these TV's is aftereffects on the picture. That is, of a ball moves rapidly across the screen, can you see a ghost trail of it? If so, the pixels are slow to turn off. A stat to look at here is the response time. Anything about 8 ms and lower is fine. I just saw one advertised at http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5006300&CatId=4717 that is rated at 4 ms.

As for Sony vs Samsung vs Vizio... Sony is probably the best brand name here but the other two can be fine.

Something you definitely should look at is a 480p picture. Why? because DVD's are still that resolution and LCD/LED TV's have to upconvert to show them. The question is, how good is it at doing that or is the player better at it? Ask to see that in the store too. A TV that does a horrible job upconverting lower resolution material will NOT make you happy.
