vizio 47 lcd 240hz
two LCD TV's at Costco $899 and $1399 which one?
Costco has two similar VIZIO 47" LCD TV's.
#1 - $899, 1080p, 120Hz.
#2 - $1299, 1080p, 240Hz, and LED backlit.
Everything else is about the same. Is it really worth $400 for the LED and the faster refresh rate? My husband watches a lot of sports.

Given those two choices and assuming other specs are comparable, I'd get the $899 model. Testing in Consumer Reports' labs indicated that there is no appreciable difference between 120 Hz and 240 Hz in solving motion blur--both do it quite well.
As for the backlighting, there are two LED methods, edge lighting and matrix. Both are great but matrix produces the very best color and brightness contrast. However, it's also the latest state of the art, so you can't expect to find it on inexpensive sets. The point here is that edge lighting is fine, but it doesn't really look different that fluorescent backlighting.
That's what the $899 set has. The fluorescent lamps will eventually burn out, and the LEDs in the other set won't. But the fluorescent lamps are good for so many thousands of hours that the set will probably die from some other cause before the lamps fail.
So for me, there's no substantial difference between the usefulness of the two sets that warrants a $400 price difference.
One thing to remember: if you buy the cheaper one and decide you don't like it, you can bring it back to Costco within 90 days for a full refund or full credit on the other set.
