vizio 42 1080p 240hz

is this a good gaming tv?
Vizio 42" Class 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, SV420M
ive heard people say that vizio are excellent tvs, and also read that 240hz lcds are pretty hard to tell the 1ms difference between pictures.
i meant its hard to tell between the 240hz and 120hz pictures.
Vizio is seen as one of the better "budget" brands out there. But its not in the top tier league. Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Sharp, LG, and Toshiba are the top tier brands.
That being said, Vizio can still be a good buy. The main thing I would watch out for is reliability. Not all, but some of their models have had some reliability issues. So you should really look around at a lot of web sites (even from stores you're not going to buy from) and see what other customers comments say. Take a look and see if anyone is flagging reliability issues on the model you're interested in. And also cross reference the model with cnet.com, hdtvreviewlab.com, or other such sites.
As for 240Hz vs 120Hz, its not a straight forward comparison, so yes sometimes there's not that much of a difference. The reason being is that those are refresh rates. Faster refresh rates are there to make up for the weak response times that LCD TV's have. They range anywhere from like 4ms to 8ms on average. So a 120Hz TV w/ 4ms response time vs 240Hz TV with 8ms is a bit more involved to try and determine which is the better TV in regard to motion playback. Personally I think the best method is to use your eyes. Go into a store, have them playback some stuff with high speed motion and look and see.
You didn't quote a price though, so its a bit hard to say if its a good buy or if there are similar priced alternatives that you should also consider. So best I can recommend is look at models from Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Sharp, LG, and Toshiba and do some homework on them using sites like the ones I mention above. See if you can find any well rated models that are in the same price range of the Vizio you picked you. Or if you find lots of customer reviews on web sites praising the TV and few complaining about reliability issues, then maybe take the leap and get the Vizio.
At 42", for gaming, my favorite TVs would be,
Panasonic TC-P42S1
Panasonic TC-P42G10
Sony KDL-40W5100
Sony KDL-40XBR9
Sharp LC40E77U
Sharp AQUOS LC40LE700UN
