Help with tv terms? (1080p, 600 hz, etc)?

Ok I'm looking at getting a new tv. I'm thinking I'm probably going to get either a 37" LCD or 40" LCD. I'm trying to keep the spending under $700 as well.

When I'm trying to keep it that cheap, I realize that I'm going to have to sacrifice something more than likely.

I know what 1080p, and 600 hz means, but is the 720p vs 1080p going to make THAT much of a difference?

Also, I've noticed that the plasmas almost all are 600 hz while a lot of the LCD's are only 60.

How much of a difference will all of this make? and What should I try to shoot for in each category?

Any recommendations for the specs of a tv would be great.

Any thoughts on some brands vs. other brands as well? I've had Samsung, Sony, and Vizio pushed on me the most.

Thanks!

whoever siad that 1080p will make a big difference of a screen that large is completely wrong the rule of thumb get 720p if the screen is smaller then 46 inches 1080p if above. dont get a tv will 60hz the pic may seems choppy or have artifacts 120 is good for movies and gaming but 240hz is ideal for gaming or 3d. good refresh rates are good for gaming aswell as response time 2ms if ideal for gaming but 8ms or under works. the refresh rate of plasmas are useless cause gaming isint good on plasmas cause of burn in.
