Do I need to buy a VCR/DVD recorder with a digital tuner?
I have a Vizio 22 inch LCD HDTV. I am looking to purchase a VCR/DVD recorder to go with it. I want to be able to record off the TV onto VHS and to be able to dub from VHS to DVD. I was looking at the store, and I saw ones with digital tuners and ones without. I have Comcast Digital Cable. Do I need to get the one with the digital tuner or without? Thanks!
If all you want to do is record a program while you watch this on your TV, then you do NOT need a tuner in your DVD/VCR as long as your TV has a video/audio output port.
If you wish to record a program different than the one you view on your TV or your TV does not have a video/audio output port, then you will need to purchase a DVD/VCR with a tuner. A digital set top box is your tuner and a DVD/VCR can hook-up to this device with either coaxial or video cables. If you use a coaxial cable, then your DVD/VCR will need a NTSC tuner (analog). If you subscribe to basic cable service without a set top box, then you will need a QAM tuner to receive the clear channel (unscrambled) digital channels and a NTSC tuner for the analog channels. The ATSC (digital) tuner is only required if you subscribe to HD cable service and you use a coaxial cable from the HD set top box to your new DVD/VCR.
