HD TV Tuner and Non-HD channel question?
Hi,
I purchased a 26" Visio LCD HD TV with Digital Tuner (model #VW26LHDTVA) for my mother for Christmas. I thought I had done my research but now I'm wondering.
The problem is, she does not have HD programming and doesn't want to pay the additional cost for it. I was agast to find that the picture quality for non-hd channels was worse then what she recieved on her 25 year old analog TV. Does this sound right? Shouldn't she see at least the same quality picture as she saw with her old TV? Do I just need to do some tuning or is this standard with HD TVs?
Also, I've read that we can put up an antenna and she can pick up her local channels in HD for free. This TV says it has a digital/analog tuner. Do I need to purchase an HD tuner in order for her to pick up her local networks or will the built in tuner do the job?
Analog (non-Digital) Cable reception is worse with a HDTV because the greater picture detail is like putting a magnifying glass to a newpaper picture. All of the sudden you see what you are missing. Basically you have got 1/3 to 1/6 of the detail that your TV is capable of displaying.
The TV has analog and digital tuners and should say that those are NTSC and ATSC. All you need is an antenna for HDTV broadcasts in your area. Even SDTV digital broadcasts will look somewhat better than analog cable.
This helps you pick and orient a TV antenna if you live in the US which you probably do since I think Vizio is only sold in the US.
