LCD vs CRT monitors – 5 tips to help you decide
Your monitor is a vital component of any computer system. After all, it’s what we use to interact with our computers. If we don’t have a monitor, then our computer is useless. Today, there is a wide range of computer monitors available to suit all different kinds of applications and budget. Here we look at the CRT or Cathode Ray Tube monitor and the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) monitors.
CRT monitors
Most computer users will be familiar with the CRT monitor. CRT monitors are the bulkier computer monitors that most computers users will have grown up with. If you’re looking for a good monitor at a cheap price, then the CRT monitors represent good value for money. They may not have as clearer picture as what is available through LCD screens as the signal they use is analog rather than the digital signal used in LCD screens.
LCD monitors
LCD monitors are becoming increasingly popular due to their sharper image, flat screen and far slimmer build. They are now dropping in price and have become much more affordable however they are still more expensive than the CRT monitors. LCD monitors use a liquid crystal display and receive a digital signal rather than the analog signal of the CRT monitors.
So, which one do you buy?
Here are some questions to ask yourself that will help you decide.
1. What’s your budget?
If you’re computing on a tight budget, then you may want to consider a CRT monitor as they are much cheaper than their LCD counterparts (although LCD monitors are now quickly dropping in price). If you decide on a CRT monitor, go for at least a 17 inch screen or 19 inch if possible. These are now not much more expensive than the smaller 15 inch models which, if you are using your computer for long periods, you will probably find to be too small.
2. How much room do you have?
If your computer desk is cramped and there’s not much room available, then, if your budget allows it, try and go for an LCD monitor. These are much slimmer and lighter than the bulky CRT monitors, especially if you are looking at a 17 inch monitor or larger. CRT monitors use much more energy and also produce more heat than an LCD monitor, so they’ll also require more room for ventilation.
3. What applications will you be running?
If you plan on running graphic design software or applications such as Photoshop, then an LCD screen may better suit your requirements unless you buy an expensive high-end large screen CRT monitor. Top quality, large screen CRT monitors are still preferred by some graphic designers because they offer a higher level of color contrast and have adjustable screen resolution. However, unless you are willing to pay a lot of money, an LCD screen will offer better value. If you are a serious gamer, then you will definitely want the clear, crisp picture of a flat panel LCD monitor.
4. How much time will you spend in front of the computer?
If you are planning on spending long periods in front of the computer screen, then you should consider choosing an LCD monitor. This is because LCD screens do not strain the eyes as much as the CRT screens thanks to their lower intensity and absence of any screen flicker.
5. Do you want something that looks good?
If you want a screen that looks good in your home or office, then you will obviously want to go for an LCD monitor. While aesthetics is not an important issue for some, it certainly will be for others. If you want a sleek, modern design then you just can’t go past a flat panel LCD monitor. The old, bulky CRT monitors are just not in the picture!
