Toshiba Regza 46XV635DB 1080P LCD TV Review
The Regza 46XV635DB is the largest in Toshiba's XV line. This television is prices at the low end of the market, but manages to pack in a lot of useful features.
The Regza displays video at 100hz (100 frames per second,) double the speed of a normal broadcast, reducing flicker. Resolution Plus increases edge detail of standard definition broadcasts to make it look more like HDTV. The backlight is always set for optimum picture quality thanks to a built-in light sensor, ensuring the brightness suits the room's lighting as well as what's on screen.
The Regza is a good choice even if you can't see the 46" screen, as it's one of the few TVs with Audio Description (AD) support. It acts like closed-captioning for the sight impaired, using a separate audio track to describe the actions on-screen.
As with most LCD TV's, there isn't much room for speakers, but the Regza gets some help with Dolby Audio. Bass Boost helps with lower tones, while voice enhancement mode makes dialog stand out against music and sound effects. One audio feature everyone will appreciate is Dolby Volume, which keeps commercials from sounding louder than regular programming.
The 46XV635 has four HDMI ports with Regza Link, which sends control data between the set and compatible devices, letting users control everything with the set's remote without having to program it. Unlike most new LCD TVs, the Regza includes many other connectors, including SCART, component video, VGA, and S-Video. An SD memory card slot is also included for watching video and viewing photos in computer-based formats. The set can be wall mounted, but this blocks most of the connectors which are on the back of the unit. Stand mounting is preferable anyway, as the 46XV635DB comes with a wide, swiveling base.
Even though it's inexpensive, the 46XV635 still comes with some green technology. The greatest draw of electricity in an LCD TV is the backlight. While some sets use pricey LED's, Toshiba's EcoPanel cuts electricity usage by reducing the light needed to see the screen. The xv635 can also be turned off completely, eliminating parasitic electricity use. Together, these lower the set's electricity usage by about 30% over a regular LCD TV.
Through a combination of legacy support and features usable in the real world, Toshiba's 46XV635DB LCD television makes for a great all-rounder at an affordable price point. It may not have the flash of a higher-priced model, but the usability and performance will please all but the most discerning videophile.
