Should I let the DVD or HDTV do the upscaling?
I have a 40 inch Sony Bravia full 1080p HDTV (model KDL40v2500) which I purchased 2 years ago for $3000.
I just bought a $60 Sony DVD player (boxing day special) which upscales the DVD image to 1080p.
Should I let the DVD do the upscaling by setting the output to 1920 x 1080p or should I set the DVD to it's normal output of 720 x 480p and then let the TV upscale to 1080p?
Am I understanding this technology correctly?
If you had purchased a high end DVD player with a state-of-the-art processor and up-conversion algorithms, then I would definitely recommend you let the DVD player up-convert.
Without knowing the product purchased, any answer here will just be a guess at best.
A $60 DVD player can hardly be expected to exceed the capability of Sony's Bravia video engine in the KDL-40v2500.
Test your configuration first with the TV and then the DVD configured for the up-conversion duties. Use the same DVD and test scenes. Let your own eyes be the judge of the results. Seldom does it matter much with these level of DVD players whether the TV or the DVD player performs the up-conversion process.
