How do you get surround sound from HDTV? I have 5 speakers but no sound? Why?
I only get surround sound from my DVD player when playing a DVD. The DVD player is connected to my Sony Bravia HDTV with a HDMI cable. All my speakers are connected to the DVD player/receiver. I tried switching audio from tv to Audio device (home thether) but still no sound? I thought the sound would work since my tv was connected to the sound system through the HDMI cable?

Do i need anything else? I was also hoping to hear surround sound when I connected my laptop to the tv ( i have lots of movies on it I would like to view with surround sound)
so whats the problem'

It's a bit more complicated than just connecting a TOSlink from your SONY XBR6 to your Sony A/V receiver. It depends on your TV source's cabling for this to work.
No HDTV will pass 5.1 surround sound audio over its TOSlink output if your TV source is connected with anything other than the coaxial input. So if you have a HD cable set top box or a satellite receiver and you use a HDMI cable or Component cables, then the TOSlink output is only going to pass 2 channel audio. If you use an antenna or your cable or satellite box are connected to your TV with a coaxial cable, then the TOSlink output will pass 5.1 surround sound, provided the channel you are watching is broadcasting surround sound format. It is better to attach the TOSlink fiber optic cable directly from your HD cable set top box or satellite receiver to the Sony A/V TOSlink input and bypass the HDTV with the digital audio. Only use the XBR's TOSlink output if you are using an antenna as your TV source.
