Sony KDL BRAVIA /??/ Series LCD: Could you explain to me the basic differrences about Sony(V,S,W,Z) series?
I did search online with Sony.com but still do not know exactly the differences between them. THANKS!
S series I think is the base line for their larger LCDs. It has the last features. I think its likely 60Hz refresh rate and the lowest contrast ratio and the like.
V series is one step up. Its still only 60Hz. Its a piano black finish. Its essentially the standard Bravia image engine. Its natively full HD (1920x1080).
W is another step up. The older models might still only have 60Hz (or 50Hz if you're in EU). But the newer ones will have 120Hz (or 100Hz for EU). So it will handle fast motion better. But its still the Bravia engine as the rest. I think it has some improved audio features (like voice zoom and front surround).
Then the next step up is the Z series. You get even better motion playback with 240Hz refresh (200Hz in EU). Though I'm not sure this got a 2009 upgrade, so it might still be using the Bravia 2 engine where as the other lines got 2009 updates with Bravia 3 image engines. It also has the audio features of the W series.
Lastly is the X series which is Sony's flagship series. I'm not sure it got the 2009 upgrade though, so is using the Bravia 2 Pro engine, not a Bravia 3 or 3 Pro (I'm not sure there is a 3 Pro yet). It has LED backlight though, giving you much superior contrast and colors. The 2008 model only came with 120Hz (100Hz in EU) motion. If there is a 2009 upgrade I would expect upgrades to the image engine and motionflow technology for this line to max it out.
