Sony Bravia seems to have grain issues?
I have a 26 inch Sony Bravia HDTV. I just upgraded my cable box to an HD one from Time Warner. I have noticed some grain in the past, but now it is terrible, especially around graphics. Also, when there is a lot of fast movement, it looks like the tv can't keep up with it and sometimes you can see like a very faint outline of the movement (if that makes sense). Does anyone know what to do?
I'm going to have to guess it largely has to do with some grain that's inherently present in the SD picture from your cable company.. and now your seeing that grain even sharper. It took me awhile to get used to SD once I went to a full HD setup as well. If your seeing the HD picture just fine, I feel pretty confident in saying it's not a problem with your video cable or connection. The outlining may be the same situation.. or seperate entirely.. I'll get to that later.
There are steps you can perhaps take to minimize the grain issue. On your screens options menu go into the display options. Somewhere within there you will find options for sharpness and noise reduction. You can try scaling back on the sharpness and make sure noise reduction is set to it's highest setting. Some screens have querks inherent to specific picture presets. In your case your screen has Normal, Vivid, and Cinema as presets. You can try each of these then tweeking all the settings to your liking. You can put each of these to the exact same settings and they'll often still show differences... so experiment with each and see if one provided you with a better viewing experience when watching SD.. after being tweeked.
As for the outlining.. it might simply be inherent to those SD channels/shows as well.. particularly if it doesn't show up on HD at all. One thing you could try.. depending on what model of cable box you have... is to go into the cable box options and change what resolution it's outputing at. I had a newer HDMI Time Warner box where this was easy to do.. the older HD boxes hid these options behind special button combination however. If you can find options to do so.. see if you can force the box to only output at 720p or 1080i and see if that's any better. Or perhaps it is outputing 480 SD stuff at HD already.. in which case if you can stop it from doing so... perhaps your screen will do a better job of upressing it itself. This is all very dependent on your box though.. so if you don't see very obvious options to do all this... please let me know the exact model number of your cablebox and maybe I can look it up. Or you can see about getting a newer HDMI cable box from TW.. if you don't have one already. If you do... try the HDMI.. might work better when it comes to upressing SD content. If your box is outputing at 1080i for everything.. setting it to 720p may even help the grain issue slightly as well.
