Recession Plus Corruption Equals Doom For National Service Organizations
Some of the first corporate failures will likely come from the pool of national service organizations (NSO). You have probably hired an NSO for work, and never knew it. You had a problem, say with your computer, and called the company for service. They, in turn, called an NSO, and the NSO hired a local subcontractor. Typically, the subcontractor for an NSO will be required to identify themselves as a representative of the company that contracted with the NSO. In most cases, the NSO has never met the subcontractor, except over the telephone or Internet. When you pay your bill, in addition to the contractor, at least two middlemen are getting a percentage of the payment.
Many NSO companies have always had very high payment delinquencies with their subcontractors, but it always seems that there is an inexhaustible supply of new subcontractors to take their place. However, that may be changing. Internet communications is improving awareness of the issue amongst subcontractors. A search on bulletin board blogs finds a wealth of information about problem NSO companies (for example, http://geeksinformed.blogspot.com).
United Service Source Inc. (USSI) in Brevard County, Florida (Melbourne) is an interesting case study. USSI organizes work for companies across the United States through a network of subcontractors. Companies like USSI have an extremely poor record for meeting the financial obligations with their subcontractors. A surprising list of companies does business with USSI, including Samsung Electronics and Verizon Satellite Communications. Samsung hired USSI last year when a slew of problems, caused by counterfeit capacitors in their LCD HDTV televisions power supplies, was overwhelming their service staff.
An NSO typically cultivates a cozy relationship with the local government. Non-local subcontractors can rarely expect assistance. Florida Today (November 23, 2008) called the situation in Melbourne "an ugly pattern of incompetence and impropriety that cries out for investigation," Florida Today further said "It would be negligent at this point for the Governor to ignore his duty to the public to make sure that the laws and the Constitution are faithfully enforced. Today, reasonable people are making the conclusion that Brevard County systemically engages in corruption and collusion."
As consumers become savvier about the problems with NSO companies, two trends are occurring. Consumers are recognizing the benefits of hiring locally, and avoiding the participation in organized criminal activity. Secondly, responsible companies are monitoring the NSO companies with whom they do business, and avoiding the ones with questionable reputations. Responsible companies realize that eventually, they will ultimately be held accountable for the NSO behavior.
