Shed Designs: How To Make Your Decision
INTRODUCTION
When you have decided that you want to build a shed, you will have to decide what type of design you want the shed to be in. Typically, sheds are quite uniform, nevertheless you can naturally adapt the design.
THE FOUR FACTORS
The design of the shed will depend on four prime factors.
Size. The proportions of the structure will also affect the design. In turn, the proportions are ascertained by its intended use. Where the shed needs to be particularly wide or tall, it may be that there are specific designs which are more apt, e.g. ones with higher roof space.
Arrangement. The configuration of the area of the floor will help identify what genus of design you could have. A regular shed has a square floor area, however this can be altered if that is what you would prefer.
Conformity. Traditionally, sheds have not been designed to compliment the corresponding house. Despite this, presently, more and more shed designs are being created which match the main building. This may be a consideration you want to factor in your shed’s design.
Style of Roof. One of the main things to take into account when choosing which of the hundreds of designs to select is what style of roof to have. Each of the styles looks different and each needs slightly different skills sets to create.
The pent roof is the simplest style of roof. It is essentially where the front wall is taller than the wall at the back, and the roof goes from the front wall to the wall at the rear on an incline. It is very simple to put together as it just needs one piece of timber. If you are after a simple shed, this is for you.
Saltbox Roof. This is a variation of the pent roof stye. But, instead of the roof just running from the taller wall at the front to the shorter back wall, the roof is comprised of two parts. The first section runs from the front wall, but rather than being on a decline, it starts on an incline. This provides the shed with more headroom towards the front. This part of the roof then dips to touch at the rear wall. This shed is great if you need to store a mixture of short and short.
The pitch roof is a popular style of roof. The left and right sides are as high as each other, and act as rests for the two parts of roof. These angle inwards towards the other upwards and meet in the center. As a result, the front and rear walls are square with triangles on the top, where the wall gradually joins the roof. This is a relatively easy roof to put together, however you may need other people to help you when join the roof parts together.
Hip Roof. This is a variant of the pitch roof stye. However, a hip roof is made up of four sections as opposed to two parts, with each of the four walls supporting a roof section. Each section leans in toward the center, where they are then connected. It is a relatively challenging roof to make because of the number of sections.
The gambrel roof style is a modification of the pitch roof stye. However, although the two walls on the side are still supporting the sections of the roof, each roof section is made up of two individual sections, like the whole roof is rounded. This enables the structure to take more things which are taller as the attic volume of the gambrel roof is bigger than that of a pitch roofed shed.
CONCLUSIONS
With the amount of styles to decide from, it can be overwhelming. However, I encourage using the style of your own home to make your new shed look like it has permanently been there.
