How do I set 1080 resolution on Panasonic Viera plasma?
I have a Panasonic 50" TH-50PZ80U. My receiver says that it is broadcasting 1080i, however when I press "info" on the TV remote, it says that it is displaying a 480 signal. What buttons do I have to press to get 1080i or p resolution on the TV? Do I need HDMI cables?

You have to tune into an HD channel. The TV info tells you what its being fed. While it is up-scaling it to the native resolution of the TV, the signal is still not 1080i. As it says 480, that means you're watching a SD channel.
Either component or HDMI cables will work. But you would need one or the other inorder to get HD. If you go after an HDMI cable, don't spend too much. Anything more than $15 is too much. Look online like Amazon.com, monoprice.com, bluejeanscables.com, etc. Loads of consumer reports have shown that the cheap HDMI cables perform 100% as good as the expensive ones.
The TV is just able to playback what you provide it. You have to provide it 720p, 1080i, or 1080p in order for it to actually display any of those HD options. So again, either tune into an HD channel (you'll need an HD antennae box or HD cable/satellite box), get an up-converting DVD player, or get a BluRay player.
