How Does My LCD TV Work?
The last few years have seen the growing popularity of LCD TVs. They offer a slim lined device that looks great in our living rooms and can offer a much improved picture. But how do they work?
An LCD TV is a flat panel TV based on liquid crystal display that has inter active properties of both liquid crystals and light. Crystals are nothing but cylindrical shaped molecules which allow light to pass through them in their twisted phase. This untwisting of molecules depends on the amount of electric field present. The greater the amount of electricity the greater the untwisting of molecules and more will be the blocking of light rays. Therefore by varying the amount of current, the intensity of light can be varied.
Liquid crystal technology is used now days in many electronic products such as camcorder, digital camera viewing screen, cell phone screens and computer monitors. LCD TVs are specifically designed to view video images. Display size of LCD TVs can vary from 13 to 100 inches. When compared with plasma TV, these are much lighter and more durable.
An LCD TV consists of liquid crystals which are placed between two polarized filters and two transparent electrodes. The job of electrodes is to access each crystal and control electric flow. The LCD crystals are unable to produce light therefore they are backed up by external light source which causes them to become visible to viewer. Each molecule or crystal behaves as a limiter, which limits the light to pass through them depending upon the supplied voltage. Therefore for bright display voltage is kept low and for dark details voltage is kept high.
Since LCD technology does not require extra electrodes to stimulate phosphorus as compared to plasma, therefore they are much thinner and lighter in weight. LCD technology is also called non-emissive and eco-friendly which means it does not give off any harmful radiations.
Owing to the above mentioned features, LCD TVs are gaining huge popularity despite of being expensive and had become a very popular choice for home theatres and TV viewing.
