With the advent of online shopping, comparisons can be made between LCD TVs with more precision and speed than shopping on the floor of an electronics store. In purchasing an LCD TV, the main statistics to target are resolution, refresh rate, contrast ratio, and price.
Resolution: Easily the most distinguishing factor between TVs is resolution. An LCD TV’s screen is made of over a million tiny colour displaying units, called pixels. For a TV of a given size, having more pixels means that they will be more “tightly packed”, and the image will be sharper. Resolutions of LCD TVs are predominantly 720p and 1080p, with 1080p being the highest resolution.
Refresh Rate: An LCD TV simulates motion to your eye by displaying a succession of slightly different images rapidly, tricking the brain into seeing a realistic fluid image. The more images that can be displayed, the more effective the trick is, and the better your TV will look, especially during scenes with rapid movement. 120Hz LCD TVs are the fastest that are currently widely available. The only caveat to refresh rate is visual glitching. This occurs when an LCD tries to display more frames than its circuits can allow, which will cause the picture to flicker or jump.
Contrast Ratio: The way the pixels of an LCD TV work, they must be “warm” to display colours effectively. If the power is turned off, the pixel will be unable to display a colour for a few seconds. For this reason, pixels in an LCD TV are never turned off, only turned down very low. Black colours are hard for these sets to produce and lower quality ones do it very poorly. The contrast ratio is a measure of how dark of black colours can be produced, with high numbers being desirable.
Price: The only criteria that does not need explanation. Not surprisingly, there are very poor quality TVs that cost quite a bit, and some high quality ones that can be had for a bargain. Online shopping is a revolutionary tool when price comparing, because most sites combine user reviews, an LCD TV’s statistics, and price on one screen, allowing all of this information to be used to effectively find the TV that will suit you best.
