Everything you wanted to know about HDTV but were afraid to ask
There was a time when if you wanted a new TV you had a choice of a large one or a small one, nowadays, alas, the choice is somewhat greater. So where do you start – you know you want to buy a TV but what do all the various terms used actually mean?
High Definition or HD?
High definition TV offers a superior picture quality over conventional TV. Owning an HDTV does not mean you will automatically be able to view these broadcasts – often you will need to subscribe to a broadcaster’s own HDTV service.
HD works because the TV signal is made up of much more digital information than is a conventional broadcast – this is why you need a special TV to receive it and also why it costs extra.
HD Formats
There are four formats of high definition broadcast and they relate to number of lines which make up a TV picture – 720 or 1080, and the way these lines are scanned on the screen – either interlaced (in two stages) or progressively (all at once).
The four formats are thus referred to as: 720i & 720p or 1080i & 1080p
The number of lines determines the quality of the picture – the greater the number then the more detailed the image.
The scanning method determines how sharp the moving images will be. With an interlaced image there will be a minute amount of flicker, whereas a progressive scan results in no flicker at all. This is only important for times when there is a lot of movement on the screen. Typically, sports and action movies will be better viewed with progressive scanning.
Frames per Second
Another common term used is Frames per Second, True Cinema or 24p. This refers to number of individual images per second which make up a moving picture. 24 frames per second is an industry standard in the movie industry so a TV with 24p will provide the optimum performance when watching films and action TV shows.
TV which can process True Cinema 24p broadcasts will be ideal if you watch a lot of movies but less important if you do not.
Frequency
The basic choice broadcast display frequency or refresh rates are 50Hz or 100Hz . A higher refresh rate will reduce the chances of pixels giving a blurred effect when changing quickly from light to dark states.
Contrast Ratio
The higher the contrast ratio of the screen then the deeper and richer the picture will be. This is the measurement of the difference in light intensity between the brightest possible white and the darkest possible black. An average contrast ratio is 500:1 but you will often see figures quoted much higher than this.
Processors & Engines
Most TV manufacturers have their own brand name processors which further optimise the broadcast signal. This is necessary in order for lower quality signals to be upscale to display correctly on the screen. Typical names you will recognise are Sony’s Bravia Engine and Panasonic’s Viera processor. These devices, although described in many ways, often do much the same thing and there is no need to try and understand.
So What to Buy?
A true HD1080p TV offers the best possible quality of picture and the various forms of up-scaling technology provide the best possible viewing experience. Depending on the kind of viewer you are this will have more or less importance.
For sports fans or lovers of action movies then a 1080p TV with 24p will be ideal but for regular TV viewing this may be an unnecessary expense.
Overall, quality and reliability of the average TV makes it difficult to go far wrong and you will often struggle to distinguish one from the other. As with most purchases in this category it is best to buy from a reputable retailer who offers comprehensive advice and a reliable guarantee should any problems occur.
