HDTV - DTV signal strength and antenna?
My wife's niece live in a rural area, hilly, and about 46 miles from a tv tower. She currently receives fair to poor analog signal on rabbit ears.
She looked at a "HDTV" antenna, but was concerned the specs said 20 miles. I don't believe she has a high def tv but I believe she has a converter box. Shouldn't she be able to receive regular broadcast digital tv on an outside VHF/UHF antenna since she currently receives fair analog on rabbit ears ?. Does HDTV simply require a higher gain antenna than DTV ?

The largest complaint people in outlying areas have with digital TV is the fact it does require at least as good of an antenna system. Digital TV signals experience something called the "cliff effect" which is the sudden loss of the signal (as opposed to fade on the old analog system).

If she currently receives a fair to poor analog signal on rabbit ears, she is going to need a higher gain outside antenna on a tower to receive the digital signal.
