Samsung Un55B8000 55 1080P Led Hdtv - The One Buy
Most of what I have to say about this TV has already been said - is what LCD to beat at the moment. Everything said about it is true - LED Local Dimming characteristics really helps to elevate the blacks - nearly - the level of plasma.
So it's good, really good, but that's all been said before. Instead I will focus on items that there are not enough IMHO.
First of all - the remote control. And 'RF (radio frequency) and IR (infra-red) as every other device out there.
Not a big deal if you only use your TV remote control, but means that you can use your existing remote (eg, cable box, receiver, etc.) to control the TV, and it also means you can not use your TV remote to control other devices. So gone are the days of a universal remote to control everything, unless you want to go out and buy a Logitech Harmony 900 Remote Control (Black) to go with it.
Since the TV, almost by definition, is the only component that is not going to be hidden, it seems odd to have opted for RF over IR.
Secondly, the stand. It 'really does not seem stable enough for a big screen. Yes, it is elegant, subtle, but it seems to provide sufficient stability in my mind.
If you are wall mounting the screen you're well (given a suitable mounting bracket to the wall, of course), but be aware that the screen seems unstable when mounting kit included. That said, there is still upside down, but living in an earthquake zone is of particular interest to me.
These are the only real issues I encountered. There are some other items that may or may not be important for some people, but I've never seen them discussed anywhere before.
The TV really needs some way to turn off inputs that are not using (or interested). I probably will never use an antenna connected directly to the TV, but I can not remove the 'TV' menu option on screen (for switching between inputs).
Come on Samsung! why not? The same applies to PC input. There is also a dedicated button on the remote to switch to this input. I would say that most people nowadays would use a cable or satellite STB, then there should be a way to re-assign the key input preferred users' and not just connected to the antenna.
It is worth noting that the OSD does not lower idle connections are HDMI then out of fashion. It should be able to do the same with other inputs, too.
The TV has an optical digital output that transmits sound from any input through a receiver. In theory this works great, except that if the use of HDMI to the TV method, only 2-channel audio is output. This may be common (eg a limit of the HDMI standard idiot), but it was totally unexpected for me.
It means that you are going to be implementing sound (presumably optical) cables between any HDMI-based and receiver - you can not rely on the audio being routed through the TV.
For reasons I do not understand all HDMI ports are arranged vertically on the left side of the unit. Although not a major problem, which makes cable routing more difficult and means that you need longer cables than you may think - saw the cost of good HDMI cables, you can add. Samsung are not just here - most TVs that I looked at doing the same thing, but it is inexplicable to me.
On a similar note, the slim profile of this screen extends also to the connectors on the back - do not try to use cables with connectors too thick (as some people like the cable from Monster Cable. The TV has just won 't take them. To be honest, the manual states a maximum thickness of 14 mm cable connectors, but it is only after this unboxed it and fiddling with the wiring.
One other thing I could not find documented anywhere - including the Samsung site - is power. The back plate lists the maximum 465W - significantly better than almost any plasma I looked the same size. typical design seems to be around 250-350W, depending on what you're viewing.
I do not understand why the powers are so hard to find these things.
Thus, despite the above negative-sounding, I'm really, really happy with the television - all good things have already been said and I'm just highlight the few things that I caught.
SAMSUNG UN55B8000 55 1080p LED HDTV - Amazing as Advertised
The picture on this TV is amazing as advertised, and is by far the clearest picture I've ever seen. The blacks are deep, colors are true and vibrant, and images are sharp and almost 3D-esque.
Before I bought this television, I had read reviews that the picture is not in poor viewing angle. Maybe my eyes are not as passionate as the experts', but I totally disagree with that. I had the television for three weeks, and I watched TV at different angles. I searched for a specific drop off in quality corners out, and I have not noticed any difference. So, I'm not sure what they're talking about.
My only gripe about this TV (if you can really call it that) is that the speakers are pretty average. And when you are watching a truly amazing picture with sound mediocre, the mediocre sound stands out and is quite annoying. So, we paid another $ 600 for an external speaker system (Bose CineMate Series II) to integrate the TV - and at that point, the total cost was rather nauseating.
