Hi how do I calibrate my HDTV?
Hi I heard that you could calibrate your HDTV buy using a Blu-ray Calibration disk. I did try to playing my settings on my HDTV & avoiding not to add more sharpness,50% of brightness & turn off noise reduction for not to have grain picture on my HDTV picture. When I was finish playing my settings to have better picture, my HDTV it doesn't look good compare the Bestbuy store. I am using HDMI 1.3a cable & I also own a Playstation 3 & I did change my PS3 display to 1080P because I have a 52"Sony Bravia HDTV LCD 1080P 120Hz. What in my doing wrong? Or in my good? Thanks!
First, the picture on most TVs in stores are NOT calibrated ... in particular they are usually oversaturated and too bright since this superficially looks impressive. While some people like this look (some shows, like CSI Miami, are intentionally broadcast that way) it's far from ideal and ultimately tiring on the eyes.
Second, BestBuy (and most A/V stores) select what they show (e.g. HD video based material, animation) on their demo TVs and in many case you won't get the same image quality from most film based Blu-ray disks. So, don't necessarily expect the same image quality as in the store.
As to calibration, you have at least 4 options (not 3 as suggested by another respondent). The 4th is to use the THX optimizer built into THX Blu-ray disks (free), the Sony equivalent built into Sony Blu-ray disks (select by punching in SONY (7669) and "enter" on the remote), or free downloadable calibration images.
If you calibrate right you will get a better image ... but it won't look as "glow in the dark" as the initial settings.
