Can you help me with HDTV purchase?
I am looking for an HDTV and I know what I want, but I need help.
I am wanting a 720P Widescreen LCD HDTV between 37 and 42 inches. I do not want 1080P, 1080i, Plasma, DLP, CRT, or EDTV. I would prefer a brand that I know like Sony, Toshiba, or some other well known brand, and not Phillips or Magnavox. I want something with a good picture and good sound. I also don't have a lot of money to work with, $2,100 is my max amount. Where can I find my dream HDTV and what will it cost? I do not want one from the Internet, I want to see the TV myself IN PERSON. But for the most part I just want a reference of what your opinions are, and what you recommend.
And I know 1080P and Plasmas look the best, but I have reasons on why I prefer 720P and LCD.
You sound like you know what you want. I can't suggest where to look since you didn't indicate where you are. That said I would recommend reading reviews of HDTVs on the internet to allow you to develop a short list to try to find for "personal testing".
That said, a couple of things for you to consider.
You state you don't want 1080p, and certainly it is not necessary now, but within a couple of years (a short time in the lifetime of a $2000+ TV) you may wish you had the capability ... so I suggest you not reject it IF you don't have to pay (much) extra for it. That said, I doubt you will find any 1080p TVs in your price range. But 1080i WOULD be worth having since some HDTV signals are 720p and others 1080i and it is always preferable to use the native resolution when possible.
Thinking outside the box I wonder whether you have considered another option entirely --- a front projector. For $2000 you can get a good HD capable projector (the Panasonic AE900 and Sanyo Z-4 are both well within your price range and LCD based) and get a 100" (or less if you want a smaller) picture on a plain wall ($30-40 worth of paint). Fed from a good DVD or HD satellite or cable tuner the picture is immersive ... like being at the movies. Personally, I'd never go back to a TV after using a projector. And it doesn't dominate a room like a TV. The only real downsides are they work best in a light controlled room and every 3 years or so you will have to replace the bulb ($300+).
