amplified hdtv antenna indoor
Please help. How can I improve my TV signal reception?
I have a 47" HDTV and I am using an amplified HDTV indoor antenna. I am only 24 miles from the broadcast tower and my antenna is rated for 48 miles. There are no buildings or trees taller than two stories within a half a mile of my home.
CABLE IS NOT AN OPTION, I CAN'T AFFORD IT, NEITHER IS SATELLITE.
Also I cannot attach anything, outdoor antenna, satellite dish, not even a flag, to the exterior of my apartment building and do not have a clear line of sight to the satellite even if I could. There is also no where near my apartment to put a pole for mounting an antenna or dish to.
Currently I have no problem receiving one station but all other stations are snowy at best. I don’t watch much TV, usually just DVDs but would like to be able to get live local news and weather.
What else can I try?
1. Go to the first link below and find out the details about your local TV transmitters. Print these out.
2. Get a (~12') length of coax cable and try moving your current TV antenna around. Indoor antennas can be very sensitive to location because the TV signal interact with building materials & appliances. Pay attention to what direction the TV transmitters are in and what is between your antenna and the transmitters. Pretend that you have x-ray vision; what metal objects are in the path of the TV signals. Note that sheet metal, foil backed insulation, or the chicken wire used to support stucco will reflect TV signals just like a mirror.
3. Get a better antenna. To get an intelligent answer as to what constitutes a "better" antenna, include details like zip code, what channel comes in good, and the details about your current antenna.

The idea that there are special "HDTV" antennas is just marketing hype (in North America); if you have a 30 year old antenna sitting around, go ahead and try it.
