Buying an HDTV and looking for advice. Go cheap for 720p or fork out cash for 1080p? Please assist.

I've been heavily looking into getting an HDTV and just need a bit of advice. We'd like to get something 42" or above and the TV that we get would more or less be an inbetween for about a year until we can afford something bigger and better (and then this TV would go in our room or something).
I'm strongly considering a 50" RCA 720p because the price is so appealing. I have a PS3 and have been told I'll notice the slight lack of output on the games and movies that can produce 1080p.
My wife thinks if we buy a 50" I shouldn't be greedy in getting a bigger and/or better quality one down the road. The only reason we're not getting anything smaller than 42" though is because our current non-HDTV bigscreen is 46" and she doesn't want to go down in size (despite the increase in quality).
We don't want to spend over $1000 on a TV right now (that will be later). So if we're going for quality and price (<$1000), what would be the best choice and where from?
Save your money and buy a 720p HDTV. I have a 46" AND 42" 720P HDTVs and am very impressed with the quality. Most big cable and satellite company's don't even broadcast in full 1080p HD, so I'd just buy a 720p HDTV and save some money.
