Is there a way to avoid pixellating an analog signal on a 42" or 47" LCD HDTV?
I was at a store where they had an analog signal playing over 42" LCD HDTVs. The picture was horribly pixelated (the Westinghouse TV wasn't as bad, but the Phillips TVs were). Is there a way to avoid this? I still watch some analog channels and that could get annoying.
It's not that they are analog signals but that they are *poor* signals. If the store you went to was truly using analog signal distribution to display on HDTVs they are, well, idiots. Analog signals degrade when split and degrade badly when split multiple times, as in a store display. The TVs then have to take the degraded analog signal and do the best job possible to process and display. Some TVs do a better job of this than others, but you can't really compare in the store because one may be getting a better signal to start with depending on where it is in the signal path. Also TVs at the store are usually adjusted poorly, or in "vivid" mode to grab your eyes in the store -- these modes tend to emphasize signal flaws too.
Of course this means nothing about how the TV will perform in your home. If you have a good cable or satellite signal, and you take the time to adjust your set away from the defaults, you will probably get much better results than you saw.
On the other hand, be aware that an HDTV displaying standard-def content will always have some artifacting and pixelating. You will want to consider how much SD vs. HD you will watch when you choose the TV size.
