Deep Cycle Battery for 2 TV's with power inverter?
If I have two of the following energy efficient LCD TV's:
Vizio VO320E 32"
Voltage Range: 100~240Vac at 50/60 Hz
Power Consumption: 84.5W average, 0.33W standby
And I wanted to run these to play video games for exactly 24hrs using a deep cycle battery and a power inverter, what type of deep cycle battery would I need as far as AH goes? Would it be practical to use a bank of one or more batteries or marine deep cycle battery? I believe I've seen them go up to 260AH but I just want to know the preffered one for my situation. What is a reliable battery brand or model?
Also, I'm guessing a 300w power inverter would be ok for the TV's as well?
So you need to supply about 200 watts.
Yes, a 300 watt inverter should be adequate.
Assuming normal inefficiencies in the inverter you'll need at least 250 watts input x 24 hours = 6000 watt-hours.
To supply this from 12 volts needs 500 amp-hours.
I've linked a battery below that claims 105 AH "at the 20 hour rate", it will supply a bit more than that if it takes 24 hours to discharge. (The available AH depends on how fast you discharge the battery... you can use more of the charge if you do it slowly.)
So you'd need about five of those in parallel... four if you're lucky. Six if the battery specs are overstated, or if the inverter losses are more than expected, etc. Don't be surprised if you have to add another battery or two to the original plan.
btw, each of those batteries weighs 70 pounds. While lead-acid batteries come in different capacities, their energy density is pretty constant - i.e. 100 AH at 20 hours or so is going to weigh about 70 pounds; if you find a 200 AH / 20 hour battery it's going to weigh about 140 pounds, etc. It will also be just about twice the overall volume of the one I linked. Paralleling a bunch of batteries is not normally recommended but you don't really have a choice here; you're not going to find the cap you need in one battery, and if you did it would take a couple of people to lift it. A number of smaller batteries will be a lot easier to deal with.
It should go without saying - but I'll say it anyway - that if you parallel four batteries each capable of supplying 800 "cold cranking amps" and you ever short the output, your leads are going to melt. And if the leads are heavy enough, hence taking a few seconds to melt instead of instantly, at least one of the batteries will likely explode.
So, safety: You need 250 watts from 12 volts... that's a bit more than 20 amps. If you have five batteries that's only four amps from each. Uuse only 10 gauge wiring, nothing thicker. Put a 20 amp fast-blow fuse in the connection TO EACH BATTERY, so that any shorts anywhere will a) be limitied by the relatively high resistance of the wire and b) the fuse(s) will blow rather than the battery. And insulate everything heavily. Otherwise you could melt a good-sized wrench in half with that stack! (Don't be tempted to try it. Again, batteries can and have exploded in such circs.)
