vizio hdtv 120hz vs 240hz ?
Should I buy the Vizio SV420M or the Vizio SV422XVT? There is a $150 difference between the two, both are 42", but the SV422XVT is 240hz with a response time of 4ms. Main usage will be for playing ps3 games. Is it worth the extra $150 or will there be no difference at all?
This number is the refresh rate for the TV picture. Standard def TV has a refresh rate of 60 Hz, but the frames are interlaced. That is, first the odd lines of the picture are displayed and then the even lines. So, while 60 scans are performed per second, the entire picture is actually scanned out 30 times a second. The interlacing was done to prevent a flickering effect on the screen, like you see in old movies. But, the HD standard is to have progressive scanning, where the entire picture (odd and even lines) are all scanned at the same time.
But, the 60 Hz scanning rate may cause picture errors during fast motion video, and especially for gaming applications. For example, if something is moving quickly across the screen and a new picture is put up every 1/60th of a second, you don't see a fluid motion across the screen. As an example, on your computer right now, move your mouse quickly back and forth across the screen. Notice how the cursor appears a number of times as it moves across the screen, instead of just moving smoothly across. This is because the refresh rate of your monitor is so slow that it can't display the cursor motion as fluid. To do so would require the picture to be displayed more times per second. In other words, you need a faster refresh rate.
The first improvement in HDTV refresh rates was from 60 Hz to 120 Hz, which literally doubled the speed at which the picture was displayed. And, refresh rates increased in multiples of 60 Hz from that point on. However, there's probably less noticeable difference between 120 Hz and 240 Hz than there is between 60 Hz and 120 Hz. This is because 120 Hz is pretty fast, and the resulting response time may be near the limit that your eyes and brain can resolve, making 240 Hz overkill.
I suggest that you go down to a store that has various TVs on display and see for yourself whether the jump from 120 Hz to 240 Hz is worth the extra $150 or not. Tell the people there what you're looking for, and see if they can either hook up a game console or put on some kind of programming that includes fast motion. What you'll be looking for is how smoothly fast moving objects move across the screen. Is the motion fluid, or is it more like what you see when you move your mouse across the computer screen?
