1080p hdtv 50 inch lcd

Which is a better deal - the 50" plasma or 42" lcd?
I'm in need of a new tv, but don't know much about plasma versus lcd, or the difference in brands.
Black friday ads have a 42 inch Polaroid LCD 1080p HDTV for $598
and a Samsung 50" Plasma HDTV for $798 - both from Walmart.
We would like at least a 42 inch, but the 50 inch size wouldn't be out of the question.
That said, I'm not sure of the difference in brands or if plasma or lcd is the way to go. Any help here? The only thing I've noticed is that plasmas seem to be cheaper?
Thanks in advance!
Random question - do plasmas "hum"? I read this on another review- any truth?
These opinions seem as divided as I am!
It looks like you aren't going to get a complete answer, so go to CNet and read about the two technologies to help you make your decision. I favor plasma for most people. A complete answer here, because of the length, is unlikely. Try http://www.cnet.com/hdtv-world/
As to Samsung vs. Polaroid, that is a laugh. That is like comparing a Toyota to a Yugo or a decent grade china to cheap pottery. Vizio is cheap junk. Samsung makes the 2nd best, reasonably priced plasma and, perhaps, the 4th best LCD brand, if you combine performance and reliability. Panasonic Viera plasma is tops in both performance and reliability.
Unless you are looking for problems, stay away, far away from the third tier, junk TVs, like Polaroid, Vizio, Insignia, Element, Dynex, RCA, and Westinghouse, to name but a few, that are assembled from god-only-knows what kind of cheap Chinese made parts - you'll likely never be able to get parts or service WHEN needed.
